TRAINING RUNS

Tuesday Training Runs

We leave at 6:30pm sharp for our regular Tuesday night runs, taking in some of the finest hillsides of South Wales. Most Tuesdays include ‘fast paced’ and ‘steady’ groups with a further ‘slower paced’ group on certain dates throughout the summer (see the calendar below).

If you haven’t been before, contact Richard at info@runmdc.org.uk  to let us know you’d like to come.

You’ll need to have with you:

    1. Appropriate kit and fell shoes for the weather. Read the FAQs below which explains what kit to bring, but please ask if you’re still unsure.
    2. A basic first aid kit and mobile phone. Dr Alan Stone, one of our club members, has written a blog about what might be a useful basic first aid kit for a runner in the hills.
    3. An ‘In Case of Emergency’ (ICE) card with relevant contact details. You can use this template to make your own ICE card. We recommend laminating it.

Please join our Facebook group for the latest updates on when and where we’re running.

Tuesday night runs FAQs

When should I come?

If you’re new to fell running, we would recommend starting on one of our regular summer season ‘slower-paced’ runs which are highlighted in yellow on our training calendar. In the winter, if people are completely new to fell running, we encourage them to try running in the daytime before running with a headtorch.

What do I need to bring?

Running in the hills comes with some inherent risks, and you are responsible for your own safety. You should bring clothing appropriate to the conditions, including shoes with decent grip, and waterproofs as needed. Also, a headtorch for night runs. If someone mentions ‘full kit’, they are referring to the full list of kit usually needed for fell races. Just ask on Facebook for kit advice.

How far do you run?

Tuesday night runs are usually in the region of 9-12km, and are always off-road. Slower-paced runs are shorter outings, usually around 6-7km.

Will I be able to keep up?

There is usually at least a ‘fast’ and a ‘steady’ group. Every few weeks during the summer we also have a ‘slower paced’ group which covers a shorter distance and is suitable for recent newcomers, those recovering from illness or injury and anyone who just fancies a more leisurely outing. No-one will be left behind in any group! You can read more information for beginners here.

How can I travel to the training runs?

Some of our runs can be reached by sustainable forms of transport with a number of valleys train lines close to the start of our runs. Winter runs from Taff’s Well are easily accessible by train or cycling. We encourage lift sharing which is usually organised through our Facebook page a few days before the next run. Worst case scenario, we usually manage to find a burnt-out old banger somewhere along the route!

Upcoming Tuesday night runs:

Runs that have been underlined will have a ‘slower paced’ group in addition to the ‘fast-paced’ and ‘steady’ groups.
