Craig yr Allt – 21st January 2017

Craig yr Allt – 21st January 2017

Race Details

Distance : 3.9 miles / 6.3 km

Climb : 984 ft / 300m (over three climbs)

General description : Brrrilliant.  The cold start was quickly appreciated as the first climb got the legs burning and the sweat pouring down your face.  Anyone thinking that they’d get their breath back on the following descent were soon disappointed.  A small “path” weaved through tussocks and then dumped you on to a welcomed hard track.  This was either a blessing or a curse; the single path meant that you were harassed by heavy panting or encouraged  to exaggerate your breath to hint to the person in front to get on with it.  The second climb gave opportunity to pass, or to be overtaken, “I’ll catch them up later”.  There was a refreshing run along the top ridge that lead to a blind drop onto the path down the Western side.  This path ticked all the boxes,  icy, muddy, stony, bendy, bumpy and steep. Not forgetting the brambles trying to help out by wrapping around your shins.  Onto the railway then back up again.  The long diagonal path opened up the race to view, “they aren’t that far ahead”.  The top ridge was a charge to the end, an opportunity for those who had it left in them.  With the finish in sight any enthusiasm for a sprint was soon sapped by sticky mud. Perfect. Thanks Gary
